Recycled paper and board supply approximately 74% of the 6.2 million tonnes of paper manufactured in the UK annually. A further 8 million tonnes are imported.

Paper waste is sent to a paper mill where it is pulped, decontaminated, and combined with new pulp from fresh wood to maintain quality.

Most paper can be recycled, but some is more complex to reuse than others. It is not usually cost-effective to recycle papers coated with plastic or aluminium foil, or containing wax, paste or gum.
