More Information
The reason we can accept mixed glass, and also forms of glass not accepted by many other recyclers, is that is it used as ‘glassphalt’ (a type of hardcore) for road-building.
New glass is made from sand, ash, and limestone. Iron, chromium and cobalt are added for colour, alumina for durability, and boron to enhance thermal properties.
Unlike most other reclaimed material, glass can be recycled indefinitely as its quality does not deteriorate when reprocessed. Bottle and jar manufacturing processes can use up to 80% reclaimed glass (known in the trade as “cullet”).
Waste Watch estimates that 315kg of CO2 is saved per tonne of glass melted.
